VIŠNJA
MARASKA
By Alan Nemaric, April
10, 2001
For
almost 200 years the essence of North and Middle Dalmatia, particularly
Zadar has been gracing the tables of the world's royalty, grand hotels and
finest restaurants. What Tokay Wine is to Hungary, what Champagne is to
France, Maraschino is to Zadar, Dalmatia and Croatia...

- Badel 1862 d.d.
Badel 1862 d.d. (osnovan 1982. godine) najveći i najstariji
proizvođač vina i alkoholnih pića u Hrvatskoj, partner koji kvalitetom svojih proizvoda
nastavlja i oplemenjuje bogatu tradiciju sadrzanu u imenima kao sto su Pokorny, Arko,
Badel i Badel-Vinoprodukt. BADEL 1862 d.d. najveće je hrvatsko poduzeće u svojoj
grupaciji s oko 50% hrvatskog trzista jakih alkoholnih pića, a orijentacija na vinski
program u zadnjih nekolko godina, rezultira vodećom ulogom i u ovom
području.

Vecernji list, May 19,

Badel 1862 has been a very frequent
motive for newspaper articles in the past months. President of the
Association of Small Share-holders, Ante Perkovic, has on a number of
occasions warned that the privatisation of that company is heading in
the wrong direction, believing this could lead to tycoons taking over
the company. The sale of Badel’s wine-cellars - which came across
strong reactions - was designated as a "sell-out of the company’s
property."
Croatia: The Homeland of Zinfandel
local Article
Obscured by history, politics and long-held misperceptions,
the true origin of America's Zinfandel grape remained hidden - until now. For more than a
century the mystery grape of American vinculture has been
Zinfandel, known to have come from somewhere in Europe but
its country of origin lost in history.

Colerain Township's
Vinoklet Winery celebrating art and wine with festival
The gregarious Kreso
Mikulic is hosting his first Vinoklet Arts and Wine Festival from noon to
11 p.m. Saturday at Vinoklet Winery in Colerain Township.
At 11069 Old Colerain
Ave., Vinoklet has a setting that is unique in Greater Cincinnati, with
vineyards, arbors, lakes and a view of rolling hills - only a few miles
from the congestion of the Colerain Avenue business strip.
The Arts and Wine
Festival will showcase works by local artists as well as Mikulic's six
current wine releases, celebrating the ''Last Crush of the Millennium.''
Vinoklet's restaurant,
known for its grill-your-own steaks, will be offering food, and Mikulic
plans music, a bonfire and grape-crushing contests.
Mikulic, who hosts
wine-tastings in a giant reconstructed wine barrel, says the dry
conditions this summer resulted in a 1999 vintage that is his ''best
yet.''
Mikulic is of Croatian
descent, and Vinoklet is a Croatian expression meaning ''little house in
the vineyard.''
The winery is two miles
north of I-275 at 11069 Colerain Ave. (513-385-9309).

Dobrovic - Croatian winemaker in South Africa
MULDERBOSCH recently
introduced its first fully barrel-fermented Chardonnay, fairly similar to
the one that came under the hammer at last year's CIWG Auction. Forty
cases of the Chardonnay Barrel-fermented 1997 are available from the farm
at R8O a bottle. The Chardonnay was fermented in first- and second-fill
French barrels. Winemaker Mike Dobrovic allowed spontaneous
fermentation in some barrels, comprising a third of the final blend. The
wine was left on the lees for 10 months, and barrels were rolled twice a
month - hence Dobrovic calls this his "007" wine - "rolled,
not stirred". He recommends laying it down for three to seven years
"to allow the full rich fruit to develop and wood tannins to
marry."

"God has blessed California with gold;
Gold has exalted the land far and wide:
Its rivers and brooks roll with treasures untold
Its rocks conceal gold veins in their inside
But from whatever you have had your fill
You no longer-derive any joyous thrill ..."
"And you my brothers in Croatian parts,
Keep on dancing, sing from your fullest hearts;
Our wine is foaming, see it sparkle, my dear
Let jokes be made-let everybody cheer,
Propose a toast to too many a son
Who lacks our wine beneath a foreign sun.....
- Croatian Vine growers in Napa
Valley- California
Croatian people
have extended their wine making tradition and expertise to all parts of the world,
especially the North American continent. There is a decisive Croatian presence and
influence in the most productive wine growing regions of California, especially the Napa
Valley. Here are some of them:
-
- Grgich Hills wines
speak eloquently of creator, from Philadelphia Enquirer June 18, 1995
- "People ask me, `How come your wines are so good?'
" winemaker Mike Grgich recounted. "I tell them it's because my English is not
so good, and I must make better wines so that they can speak for themselves."

- Established in 1857 by Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy,
Buena Vista claims the title as the oldest premium winery in California. The majority of
the grapes used by Buena Vista are estate grown in the famed Carneros region just north of
San Francisco Bay. "Harry's a body builder, likes to workout," says Zak, flexing
his own biceps. "Got arms bigger than my thighs. But he's a teddy bear, a lovable
creature inside. We decided to do this picture to show how much Harry supports the women
who create Buena Vista's wines from vineyard to bottle." Now Zak smiles big.
"Because without them, the wine don't happen."

- Milat Vineyards
St. Helena: (707) 963-0758
- We are a small family-owned and operated winery in the Napa
Valley, producing only Estate-bottled wines. All of our wines are sold exclusively from
the winery, through the tasting room or by mail order.
The winery is located on 22 acres of vineyard in St. Helena. The property was purchased in
1949 by Richard and Izetta Milat, who raised four sons there. The grapes grown on the
property were sold to local wineries. Two of the brothers, Mike and Bob, took over the
vineyard operations in the 1970's. In the early 1980's with all of the expansion in the
wine industry, the family realized that the logical progression was to go from premium
grape growers to premium wine producers, and so in 1986, the winery was built. Mike and
Bob and their wives, Carolyn and Joyce, continue to operate the vineyards and winery.
